Jesus: The Ultimate Odd One Out

The Odd One Out

The story of David's anointing reveals profound truths about God's unique way of selecting and using people for His purposes. While society gravitates toward external qualities like appearance, status, or capability, God prioritizes the internal condition of the heart. He specifically looks for qualities like faith, humility, integrity, and genuine love for others.David's journey from shepherd to king exemplifies how God's plans often unfold through unexpected paths and timing. What seemed like mundane shepherding duties were actually divine preparation for leadership. This pattern of God choosing unlikely candidates continues throughout scripture, demonstrating that human limitations and social standing don't determine spiritual usefulness.God deliberately chooses those the world overlooks to demonstrate His power working through human weakness. This approach not only brings glory to God but also offers hope to anyone feeling inadequate or out of place. Our perceived shortcomings or outsider status might actually be the very qualities God intends to use for His purpose.

  • Finding Purpose When You Feel Like the Odd One Out: Lessons from David's Anointing

God has a special place in His heart for those who feel like they don't fit in. Through the story of David's anointing in 1 Samuel 16, we learn powerful truths about how God sees and chooses people differently than the world does.

Why Does God Look Past Outward Appearances?

While people tend to judge based on external qualities like physical appearance, age, or popularity, God looks directly at our hearts. He values qualities like:

    • Faith

    • Character

    • Humility

    • Integrity

    • Love

    • Grace

    • Respect

Even Samuel initially thought David's older brother Eliab must be God's chosen one based on his appearance. But God reminded Samuel that He doesn't see as humans see - He looks at the heart.

How is God's Plan Different Than Our Plans?

God's plans often unfold differently than we expect:

    • He chooses unexpected paths and people

    • His timing may be longer than we want

    • Small beginnings and humble circumstances are part of His purpose

    • What seems like setbacks may be preparation

David's time as a shepherd wasn't just manual labor - it was preparation for leading God's people. Every experience, even difficult ones, can be part of God's larger plan for our lives.

Why Does God Choose the Unlikely?

When God chooses those the world overlooks, it brings Him glory by demonstrating His power working through human weakness. As 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 explains, God deliberately chooses the foolish things to shame the wise and the weak things to shame the strong.

Jesus himself was the ultimate "odd one out" - rejected and crucified by the world, yet through His sacrifice came the greatest victory. When we feel inadequate or overlooked, we're in good company.

    Life Application

    This week, consider:

    • Where do you feel like the "odd one out"?

    • Are you trying to follow your own plans or surrendering to God's?

    • What "small beginnings" might God be using to prepare you?

    • How can you focus more on developing your heart than your outward appearance?

    Challenge yourself to:

    • Identify one area where you've felt inadequate and surrender it to God

    • Look for ways God might be using your current circumstances as preparation

    • Focus on developing godly character rather than external appearances

    • Trust that God has a purpose for you, even if it looks different than expected

Remember - God doesn't need you to fit any mold. He chooses those who are faithful and willing to be used for His glory. Never count yourself out because of what others think. God can use you to accomplish great things.

  • I'm gonna share with you a story. Story of David.

David's anointing. David's anointing. One of the most beautiful and profound moments in scripture. I'm not talking about the David and Goliath. I'm not talking about that.

Not talking about the David and the king and everything down there. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about David, the shepherd in the early days. Humble beginnings, small things, right? That's what I want to look at this morning, and I want to look at a specific passage in 1 Samuel 16, 6, 12, where Samuel goes to Jesse and his sons to anoint the chosen one.

What's interesting to me is the chosen one was unexpected. It wasn't the one that you and I would say, oh, it's not a king. It's not muscly and ripped like Pastor Trevor. That's not king. Right?

Jenny's the only one going, yeah, that's my man. That's my man. You go, Jenny, support him. That's right. Preach it.

Because what the world does, the world looks on what's outside, and then they make a decision. The world Makes a decision going, yep, you look like a king. Wilson's king and queen. You look like a king there. You look like a king there.

Wow. What the Lord does. He goes, nope, not you, not you, not you. Definitely not me.

But where's the youngest son? Where's the one that hasn't been caught up to the front? Where's the young boy that's not part of an anointing ceremony. Oh, he's in the fields tending to the sheep. I want to share with you church, that God loves the old ones out, the ones that don't fit, don't belong, don't fit the mould, don't talk, don't speak.

The way I struggle, Alex, I struggle to articulate everything that comes through my head. I think it, I thought I articulated. It goes, nah, different language. You know, you get the translator and all that. Alright, here's what I really meant.

God doesn't care. God will come to me most times because I don't care if you can't speak English or spell or your grammar's really bad. I see your heart. I see your heart. There's no problem being the odd one out because God doesn't care what's on the outside.

He cares what's on the inside. Amen. Here's a passage. When they arrived, Samuel arrived at Jesse's house. Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, surely this is the Lord's anointing.

But the Lord said to Samuel, don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance. But the Lord looks at the heart. Then Jesse told his son Abinadad to step forward and walk in front of Samuel.

But Samuel said, this is not the one the Lord has chosen. Next, Jesse summoned Shemaiah. But Samuel said, neither is this the one the Lord has chosen. In the same way, all seven of Jesse's sons were presented to Sam. But Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen any of these.

Then Samuel asked, are these all the sons you have?

There is the youngest, Jesse replied, but he is out in the fields watching the sheep and goats. Send for him at once. Samuel said, we will not sit down to eat until he arrives. So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.

And the Lord said, this is the one anoint him. He said that passage before. He's read that before. Yeah. Thank you.

One of you start on my message title. My message. The odd one out who's here has ever Felt odd of being in positions of feeling like the odd one out? Yep. Turns the person next to you and share something funny about you being the odd one out.

    Couple minutes. Let's do.

How do we go? What are some of the situations? Yell them out. Don't be shy. Don't be shy.

Family. Yellow. School. School. Where else?

Work. Where else? Family. Family is a big one, right? Who would have thought that you could be the odd one now in your family?

Who would have thought that? I got five brothers raised up. They're all tradies and yet I cook.

They all working after hours playing rugby and training and all that. What am I doing? I'm learning the scales on the piano. My left hand. Odd one out.

Black sheep of the family. Don't you feel like that? You don't fit the mould. You don't look the part. You're not even invited to be at the front line with everyone else.

You're too busy out in the fields. You got told to go back there. You got told to sit back there. Can I tell you? Southern Church.

God sees more than what you see.

Even if the world calls you odd, Different. God sees your uniqueness. He sees your calling. He sees what's in here, doesn't care what's on the outside.

Today I want to share with you three reasons why God loves the odd ones out and why he chooses you. You ready? Church number one. God sees beyond our outward appearances.

God sees beyond. He looks at our heart, our character.

While we often judge based on external qualities. Physical appearance, age, popularity. God sees the heart. He sees the inequality that matter to him. Faith, character, humility, integrity, love, grace.

    Respect.

Verses 6, 7. When they arrived, Samuel took one look. Surely this is the Lord's anointed. Surely look at him built. He's ready.

He's first and last. Surely this is the one.

The Lord says to Samuel, don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn't see things the way we, you and I see. People judge by that word appearance. But the Lord looks at the hearts, a person's heart.

I used to hire chefs many years ago as a head chef and exec chef. I used to hire chefs based on how well they can fillet a fish, right? How well they can break apart a pigeon, quail, right? All the game meats, all of that pork, whatever it may be. Can they break it down and not have any wastage at all?

So every time I audition. Not audition, not a music team.

Every time, we'll go through the process of hiring a chef. I'll get a chopping board and knife, and I'll put whatever gay meat I have, and I'll put it there. And year after year, they'll come through. They'll come through, and they'll do it really well. No wastage, no nothing.

It's pristine. It's, like, ready to be thrown in the oven, seasoned, whatever else, and then sent.

And then I started to see issues. I'm like, yeah, it's not going to work. A lot of the chefs that I hired, based on their practical ability, where a lot of the chefs that I let go, go, I started hiring from the inside. I changed the whole process, my whole mindset. When I hired chefs, I'll sit them down, I'll say, how well, even knife.

He goes, look, I struggled to sharpen it with steel. I don't know how to use a rock. I don't even know how to put my chef jacket on. How many buttons is it? I see.

I didn't care. I lost. Didn't care, though. What they were able to do is be there earlier than expected.

What I did love is the fact that they were still there while everyone was gone cleaning. Respectful, loving, caring, integrity. Never showed up. Never showed up. Pretending to be someone that they're not, Trying to get everyone on their side and have a big old laugh and look at the head chef and go, yep, this is putting them together.

But deep down inside, it is toxic.

When the Lord looks at your heart, he looks past everything that you and I see on the other side.

Jesus, Jesus. Jesus loves your heart. He loves your heart a lot. The Pharisees, the religious people. In the book of Matthew 23, 27, 28, here's what Jesus says.

What sorrow awaits you cheap teachers of religious law? And you Pharisees, hypocrites. For you are like whitewashed tombs. Beautiful on the outside, but filled on the inside with dead people's bones and all sorts of impurity. Outwardly, you look like righteous people, but inwardly, your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Imagine waking up on a Monday morning to that.

That's how precious your heart is to the Father.

That's how valuable your heart is to the Father. We can dress it up and we can chuck a bow in it, and we can say all the right words and all the lingo all you want. Father will look in here. Where is your heart right now?

Deep down inside, Forget about all of this. Where is your heart? In the Father right now?

He condemns the Pharisees for the outward show of righteousness while their hearts were far from God.

God values heart transformation over external appearances.

What do you see when you look at your life? Church?

You look around at your family, you look around at everything. What do you see? Sometimes you wake up and you'll see doubt. You'll wake up and you see fear. Fear.

You wake up and you see all these things. But you know what God sees in you? Triumph. Sees a warrior, mighty woman and a mighty man of God in there. He sees a calling.

He sees a purpose. He sees fruit. Sees a life of hope. That's what he sees. You know what he doesn't see?

He doesn't see. At 10 o'clock, he ticked the box. Here I go. I've done church for the week. That's the outward expression.

He sees in here. He sees what you're doing during the week. Why are we fasting? We're not fasting just because it's what we do for church. We're fasting because it's a deep relation with the Father which requires us to go deeper.

Not on a Sunday morning, but every single day of the week.

He sees beyond your appearance, Church. And the good news is that God doesn't judge based on that word. He sees your heart, your potential and your willingness to follow his will. Remember, God does not define you by what the world sees. He defines you by who you are on the inside.

Amen. Church, you with me? That's the first one. Second one is this. God's plan is different.

Different than yours. I know some of you going, what? The whole time, I thought we were in sync. We're in line.

Your plans are here. Far from where God wants you. Me too. I'm in this boat. He chooses an unexpected path.

He could have just said Samuel. Before you get to Jesse's, line up all your sons. And don't forget. Don't forget about David. He'll be out in the fields.

Bring him along too. Nah. Even Samuel didn't see it. Even Samuel didn't see it. Surely it's you.

Big muscle man, built like a warrior. Surely it's you. Nah. God's plans are not based on what the world values, but on his divine purpose. David was chosen not because he was the strongest or the oldest, but because of his heart for God.

God's plan will take longer. He's doing a different work that others don't understand. Took longer, but it was all in God's plan. God's plan would not look like yours.

Verses 10 and 12 in the same way. All seven of Jesse's sons represented Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen any of these.

And he goes, are these all the sons you have to restore? The youngest. But he's out in the fields watching the sheep and goats. Send them for once, at once. We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.

That line there is interesting because it tells us that there is a matter of urgency. Samuel hasn't got all day. He hasn't got all week, hasn't got all month. It's like, I'm not going to sit down to rest, do nothing until that brother is here in front of, of me. Send for him at once.

He was dark, handsome, with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, this is the one. Anoint him.

David was the youngest. The thing about plans is that we can all have. Go through our lives and have different things we go through. But we never think that it could be the plan of God, right? Put your hands up.

You've gone through something in your life. In no way have you thought that that was a God plan. No way. I used to work. I shared this a while back.

Onion fields. If you ever work at onion fields, this is rock bottom, this is onion fields. Like, you can't get any worse than onion fields, right? You smell like onions, the onion lines. Like there's no ending.

There's no support or encouragement, right? There's none of that. And you just smell onions, dust everywhere, all your pus and whatever it is, right? It's the worst job.

My family in the corner laughing because we came from the bottom. Now we're here.

But you know what it's worth me? Resilience. But I didn't know that back then. I could have given up, could have given up and go now I've had enough. I'm going to get an office job when I get education.

    Whenever that happens.

Resilience, need resilience. My years as a chef, all those years as a chef, never realized what it really would do for me. And the plan that God had for me. Me, calm under pressure. You meet any proper chef in the industry, I'm not talking about cafes and that.

No disrespect, for the record, we all one family. One family, right? It's a different time chefing, right? You don't, you don't think about it back then, but it keeps you calm in your most pressured moments. Cool as us, able to focus, locked in and do the job.

Community service. My brother here on the drums, DJ Upkeep. I worked with him in the drug and alcohol Space in the community service job. You know what I learned the first thing he'll be laughing too. I learned how to write a proper email.

You know what it also taught me? Cultural diversity. How do I talk to someone who doesn't look like me? How do I show respect to someone who's not like me? How do I value cultures and traditions without losing the honour of mine?

Every little small thing that I've gone through, and you too, in your lives and all that was part of a bigger plan for the Lord to have in your life. I'm now blessed to be a part of this church, be a part with you guys. And I now see why I've gone through those things. Resilient heart to say, hey, I'm here if you want to chat. Calm under pressure, everything falls apart on the worship team.

The lights don't work. Whatever. It's all good. We keep going as a family. Diversity.

People from different cultures. How do I say hello to you without being disrespectful? Fault. Teach me something from your culture.

No. Definitely. David. One of the versions said he was out in the fields. All part of God's plan.

Tending the sheep. He wasn't just tending to the sheeps and goats.

He was shown how to love the Lord's flock.

You can't be a king if you can't love chasing the lions and wolves. What did it do? Gave him courage. More than just the Goliath.

Goliath was. The battle was great. It's famous all across there, but we even look before it. David's persistence. Why not?

Why can't I go to battle? That's courage. That's courage.

His worship, his harp, his moment on the fields. What was it? You can't do any of these things without sitting in the presence of the Father. That's what he did. He sat, he worshipped.

He wrote songs. He prayed, prayed, fasted, sat with the Father.

    All in God's plan.

God's plan for your life is sometimes found in the small things. Small things that we take for granted. And if I'm being honest, church, sometimes the small things that we take for granted is because we think we deserve better. We take them for granted because we believe that our position, our leadership position should be up here, not down here. Well, here's the truth.

It's not about you or me. It's about honoring the Father. It's about giving glory to the Father. And whatever has happened in your life and is about to happen is part of a bigger plan. Is where he shapes you into a person that you're called to be.

You're not going to get all the answers right now. Nothing is going to come flow easily for you right now. But in small things and in different things, and in a season of giving your heart to the Father, you will see it unfold.

Zechariah 4:10. Don't despise the day of small beginnings.

How's your plan for your life going, Church?

If you're here now and you're struggling to line up your plan with the Lord's, how are you going with that? How's it working out for you? I'm grinning because I've been there.

Been there, had all my plans. Yeah. I think at one point I wanted to be a rock. What? No.

This haircut, right? I'm gonna open up a chain of restaurants. I'm gonna make heaps of money, and then I'm gonna buy a yacht and I'm gonna sail off into the sunset and I'll bring. Alex had all these plans, was ready for me. I was like, yes, yes.

And God just came along. And that is not the plan for you, brother. Not the plan for you. And I believe that's the same thing for everyone here, sis. I can see you nodding your head.

Yeah. You trust that plan. The biggest thing is to hold tight to the plan.

The hardest thing, the hardest thing you'll ever do in your life is neglect the plan and go do your own plan. You'll find that out later. But the plan of God for your life, you may not understand it right here, right now, in the very beginning, but you will see it unfold. And you will turn back and you'll go, ah, you got me there. Oh, yep, you got me there again.

God sees your heart, sees what's on the inside.

He's got a plan for you. Even when you think you don't have a plan, even when you think that you're not worthy enough or you can't do this, or you can't do that, that. I'm just one of the many examples that a young boy from the Pacific islands whose second language is English, can really grab hold of God's plan and see others grab hold of that same plan. Amen.

God doesn't need you to fit any mold. Just as he chose David, he chooses those who are faithful how and willing to be used for his glory. Never count yourselves out because of what others think. God can use you to accomplish great things. Amen.

That's the first two things we see there. The heart. The heart. Not the outward appearance. The Heart.

God's plan, not yours. Third thing is this. God's choice of the odd one out brings him glory. Not your glory, not about you brings him glory. God's choice.

He uses the weak and the lowly to display his power to the world. The selection of David, the youngest son, the old one now, was not for David's sake, but for God's glory. God specializes in choosing those who the world considers weakness, weak or unimportant, so his power can be clearly seen.

The worship team launched a new song, none like youe. There is none like him. There is no other name like Jesus.

We do this for him. We give him glory.

And it doesn't matter if you've made it in life or you haven't. God uses any situation that you go through, so he gets all the glory. Amen. We see in 1 Corinthians, chapter 1, verses 27, 29 says, But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. God chose the weak because of the will to shame the strong.

Strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are so that no one may boast before him.

Isn't that powerful. David's rise from the fields to the throne was not about his greatness, but about showing God's ability to work through the most unlikely people. The odd one out, whether it's David, a humble shepherd, or you, someone who feels overlooked, out of place, God sees beyond the surface and chooses us for his divine purpose.

In the Bible, I don't think there is a clearer example of the odd one out to the world than Jesus Christ.

    There's no other perfect example.

Persecution, persecuted, beaten, yelled at, spat on.

    They expected.

They expected Jesus to be someone.

    He was never like them.

He was different. He was built different. Was he the odd one now in the world? Yeah. Was he the one that you'd want in your team?

Yeah. Is he the one that. He's the only one in your team to fight for you? Yeah. Amen.

    Yes.

Where can you find them? Anywhere. Up front, down there, on the sides, in the fields. Shepherd, carpenter, you find them anywhere.

The crucifixion of Jesus and Matthew says this. The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. Look at you now. They yelled at him. You said you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days.

Well, then, if you're the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross.

The leading priests, the teachers of religious law and the Elders also mocked Jesus. He saved others. They scoffed, but he can't save himself. So he is the king of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, now, and we will believe in him.

He trusted God. So let God rescue him now if he wants him. For he said, I am the Son of God. Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with him ridiculed him in the same way.

If you think you have a bad as the odd one out, Jesus died one out in the eyes of the world, died on the cross in weakness. Yet through the act of humility, he achieved the greatest victory of humanity. Character. Act of humility. Character, respect, love, grace.

    My life before yours.

If you look at David's eventual reign as king, his life from the shepherd's field to the throne was a testimony to God's ability to take the weak and to use them for his glory. In David's story, God is showing that it's not about the individual strength, but about his power working through the weak. In Jesus sacrifice, we saw that power.

We saw a heart of an awesome God. We saw a plan unfolding, and we see a glory given to God.

If you feel like the odd one out today, remember, church, that you are not counted up by God. God sees you, chooses you and wants to use you for his glory. You are the vessel through which God's greatness can shine. And you too. I believe God will speak to and say these words.

This is the one. Anointing. This is the one. This is the one.

Do you see what God sees in you?

Are you stuck in that I'm not good enough moment?

I don't fit the mould moment?

Are you living out what's already inside you? Church, I wanted to ask you this morning how I know Pastor Trevor mentioned that. How are you going with your fasting?

    What is.

What does the presence of God look like for you during this time of fasting? What are you feeling here?

Fasting is a powerful thing and one of the many things it's given me over my time. And even right now in this time of fasting is a reminder as a reminder who you are. It's a reminder that God looks at your heart, not on the outside appearance. It's a reminder that no matter how challenged you are, it's a reminder to know that what difficulties and circumstances you may go through in your life, the reminder is that it's part of a bigger plan and it will unfold itself. Fasting.

Fasting. Fasting is what? It's not so much giving up any of that, it's more so aligning yourself with the heart of the Father. Father, you can give up all you want, but if you don't use that time to step in line with the Father, just say, I've lived my plan all this time and nothing's worked. I'm going to follow your plan now.

I'm going to line it up now. I'm going to follow you.

It's about realigning yourself with the heart of the Father so one day you will get to see what the Father sees in you. Because the part of being the odd one now, it's ourselves. We doubt ourselves.

We bring on the anxiety. We tell ourselves up here that we shouldn't, we're not ready for this. We tell ourselves up here that now I'm just gonna sit here and I'm just gonna do church. In that we tell us lives, we, we can sometimes be the problems to us being the odd ones out. I've gone through this before.

I've gone through this before and kept on coming back to me, kept on coming back to me, kept on coming back. And it got to that point for me while I go, you know what? I've had enough. Why would I keep living in the same thing over and over and over? And if God is my Lord and Saviour and that's what I've chosen, I will let him transform me.

I will let him change me. If that's the father you serve, can I ask you here today, are you letting him change your life? There's only so many things you can say to justify why you, you can't be a part of the Lord's plan.

What lies will you continue tell yourself up here?

Think about David. He was true from the get go. He was true, he was real. He served in the simplest things. He served in the things that people don't even worry about because it's not in the limelight.

Him defeating Goliath was just one of the many great things.

I want to encourage you church. I've asked the, I've asked the team to do the song we praise.

There's a brother back there. He's watching you.

Yeah, he's got a plan for you, brother.

He's got a plan for you.

He's got a plan for every single one of you and what he wants to do in your life. He wants to see your heart, the heart of love, heart of integrity, hard to push through.

He has a plan for your life. I encourage you to grab hold of that plan and I encourage you to Give him glory any chance you get and every opportunity that you have. So why don't you stand with me? Why don't you stand with me? The team are going to lead us in this full song.

And I want you to reflect. I want you to worship. I want you to be. I want you to speak to Father in your own way that you are not the odd one out. That you are the chosen ones and he's chosen you for greatness.

Where Jesus Jesus bled and died for me I see who his hands and feet My Savior on that cursed the tree his body bound and drenched in tears they laid him down in justice to the entrance sealed by heavy stone Messiah and all along oh, praise the name of the Lord our God oh, praise his name forever more Fore endless days we will see your praise alone O Lord Al and on this earth at break of dawn the sun of heaven rose again on triple day forever Forever he shall return in your robes of wine the blazing sun shall be denied Jesus, Lord oh Lord we give him praise Church look at your mind to close your eyes.

    Father. We.

You choose the old ones up. You choose the weak. You choose the room because you have a plan for each and everyone give you glory to serve you. So in this place, Father, I pray right now, Lord God, that something has shifted in the hearts of your people. Something has shifted.

Something has moved. They are no longer at the back, Lord. I pray, Lord. Father. They're at the front now, Lord, that they're putting up their hands to say, I'm here.

I'm chosen. I'm free. I know who I am in Christ, Lord. I pray for every single person right now, Lord, that your plan will continue to flourish in their lives, Lord. That you would be the example.

That you would be the rock, Father. That they will be planted along the riverside, Lord.

Father, I pray that your name will be exalted. That your name is like no other name. Your name is love. Your name is grace. Your name is integrity.

It's trust, Father. And I pray, Lord God, that your name will continue to impact the lives of many in this place, Lord. So as we leave this place, Heavenly Father, I pray that you will continue to do your work, Lord. That you are building your church. There is none like you, Heavenly Father.

There is no other name like yours, Lord God. There is none like you, Father. And every single day of our lives, we will continue to live lives that praise your name in Jesus Christ, Lord. And we pray, Church. Amen.

Amen. Why don't we give him a hand?

Thank you, Church. Once you join us for a cup around there? Morning tea. We'll see you next week. Thanks, guys.
