What Is Baptism

  • Being baptised doesn’t make you a Christian, only our faith in Jesus Christ does that. Baptism shows that you have made a decision to follow Jesus in your heart.

It reminds us that Jesus died and came alive again.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the thrid day according to the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 NIV

It shows everyone you’re a new person

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

  • Here at Connect Christian Church, we wait until you are old enough to believe and understand the meaning of baptism before we baptise you.

Please don’t get baptised because someone is telling you to, or because someone else is doing it. Being baptised needs to be your decision because you want to.

Once you have decided to follow Jesus and you understand the meaning of baptism, you can be baptised! Just like the early church people who were baptised when they decided to follow Jesus Christ. Acts 2:41 NIV

  • What do I wear?

It’s helpful to come to church waring the clothing that you will be baptised in (we recommend wearing a black t-shirt and shorts/leggings.) Please remember to bring two towels with you and a change of dry clothes.

Do I need to arrive early?

Please come to church 30 mins early so that you can join us in the prayer meeting. One of the pastors will chat with you, answer any questions you may have, and guide you through how the service will run on the day.

What will I be asked to do?

You will be given the opportunity to share why you are being baptised so please prepare a short 1-2 min testimony about why you are getting baptised or what God is doing in you.

The pastor who is baptising you will then ask you a couple of questions (like: do you believe Jesus is your Lord and Saviour) before immersing you under water.

After your baptism, you can get changed into dry clotehs. You will be given a certificate to commemorate your baptism.

Can I invite friends and family to my baptism?

Your baptism is a special moment in your life so please invite your loved ones along to celebrate this special day!

What if I was christened as a baby?

It is excellent that your parents had the intention for you. But since the Bible portrays baptism as your own response to God, it is best to be baptised, by full immersion, now that you’re old enough to make that decision yourself.

    I’ve got questions!

Please do not hesitate to speak to a pastor/and or leader about any questions that you may have about being baptised.

Being baptised is a celebration, and our pastors and your church family cannot wait to celebrate and encourage you in this next step that you are taking, in your walk with Jesus Christ.
